Have you played Undertale Yellow?
After completing it, did you think: "Man, I really wanna replay Undertale now, but I've already played it so many times..."
No?
WELL TOO BAD!
Introducing: Undertale Red & Yellow!
An Undertale mod designed to scratch that Undertale Yellow itch!

— The game's description on the GameJolt page

Undertale Red & Yellow is a Undertale game mod featuring elements from UndertaleYellow by ShinixUndertale Red & Yellow - TV Tropes (2). The mod follows Frisk as they make their way through the Underground, but this time they have two head ghosts keeping them company; the Fallen Human and Clover, the soul of Justice.

The mod can be downloaded from GameJolt hereUndertale Red & Yellow - TV Tropes (3).

The author has a TwitterX blog hereUndertale Red & Yellow - TV Tropes (4) and a Bluesky blog hereUndertale Red & Yellow - TV Tropes (5).

This mod contains examples of:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Chara and Clover both get a good laugh if you happen to fall for Sans's telescope prank in Waterfall.
  • Adaptation Expansion: The mod lets you explore a small section of the Steamworks and New Home, areas that didn't exist or are inaccessible in the base game.
  • Anti-Frustration Features:
    • With the exception of some sequences, like certain cutscenes or encounters with Undyne, you have access to a run button.
    • There are accessibility options like auto-run.
    • When Alphys starts bombarding your new phone with notifications, Chara tells you to shut it. You're then given the options to turn off notifications. Phone calls still go through, though.
  • Ascended Meme:
    • Talk to Sans after the "blue stop signs" conversation enough times and eventually he'll say this gem:

Sans: I remember... you're stop signs.

    • In version 1 of the mod, the One-Hit-Point Wonder difficulty is called "Merg", after the YouTuber who achieved Undertale Red & Yellow - TV Tropes (6)Memetic Badass status for his No-Hit runs. This has changed for version 2.0 onwards to avoid confusion.
  • Back from the Dead: The True Pacifist ending has Clover come back to life and staying with Flowey/Asriel.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Chara has a few instances in the 2.0 version.
    • When Clover asks Frisk why they say "TALK" when they want to talk with the others, Chara says it's because of the menu.
    • At one point, they call out Clover on poor text box management.
    • They comment on your time in reaching Asgore. Chara is angry if you take more than a day, unimpressed if you take more than seven hours, praises you if you do it in under four hours (and suggests shaving an hour off "next time," to Clover's concern), and thinks you're insane if you pull it off in less than one.
  • Broken Bridge:
    • You can't explore most of the Steamworks because the elevator beyond the room where you fight Axis in Yellow is broken.
    • You also can't explore much of New Home because of a roadblock.
  • Call-Back:
    • The bit of floor in the Ruins that Clover fell through back in Yellow is now boarded up, with Clover suggesting you don't pull the lever next to it, just in case. Post-Genocide, Clover will passive-aggressively forbid you from pulling the lever.
    • The Empty Gun is replaced with the Wild Revolver, which is the weapon Starlo bought Clover in Yellow. Chara is floored that's a real gun. Still no ammo though.
    • Clover says Undyne is stronger than any monster they ever faced, which is true if you check the stats of all bosses from their Pacifist run.
  • Color-Coded Speech: Chara speaks in red text and Clover in yellow. Integrity speaks in dark blue, which is how it's obvious when they speak through Kanako.
  • Combat Commentator: Chara and Clover will occasionally comment on the random encounters, often giving tips and advice on how to spare them. Usually they don't comment on bosses, except for Kanako and Asriel.
  • The Conscience: Clover will call out Frisk on any less-than-moral choice they make with increasingly snide remarks. For example, in a Neutral playthrough where you kill everyone, they say it's no wonder nobody asked for Frisk's name since they attack everyone. A fitting role for the soul of Justice.
  • Continuity Nod: There are so many to Undertale Yellow.
    • Clover identifies the secret fourth frog as a Micro-Froggit.
    • Clover will occasionally compare the encounters to those of their game. For example, if you encounter a Vegetoid, they'll wonder what's up with sentient plant monsters.
    • Gerson mentions meeting Clover if you talk to him about the previous humans. This dialogue was removed in the 2.0 version.
    • Clover says Martlet and Papyrus would get along well.
    • They complain about not finding gunpowder in Asgore's fridge. Gunpowder is the best healing item in Yellow.
    • When checking the wall left of the MTT resort, they and Frisk confirm it's an ordinary wall. Clover's check in their home game says "An ordinary wall?" Part of this exchange is removed in the 2.0 version.
    • Clover is enraged with the changes Mettaton did in Hotland.
  • Cutting Off the Branches: The mod assumes Clover followed the perfect Pacifist ending, aka willingly gave up their soul. This is justified by them being bewildered by Flowey's true colors, being more active in encouraging you to be a pacifist in contrast to Chara letting you do whatever you wish, and Ceroba (who needs to be spared to reach said ending) appearing as an NPC in the Yellow sections of New Home. Undyne, if spared and befriended, will also acknowledge this fact, and admit how brave they were to do so.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Chara at almost all times. Their description of Waterfall stands out.

Chara: There's water. And it falls. What else do you need to know?

  • Developer's Foresight:
    • If you have the Wild Revolver equipped in the fight against Sans, when you kill him, he won't have a slash wound, but a bullet wound.
    • In the 2.0 version onwards, Clover's dialogue after fighting Kanako slightly changes depending on whether or not you met Ceroba in New Home.
    • If you abort a Genocide run by sparing Monster Kid while killing Undyne, sequences exclusive to the run are still present (including Alphys's complete absence due to evacuations), and when you get to the end, rather than facing Mettaton NEO, you instead fight a modified version of Mettaton EX without the yellow soul mechanic.
  • Difficult, but Awesome: The Wild Revolver. If you nail all six of its hits, it deals astronomical damage, far outclassing all other weapons. If you don't though its output is around the Burned Pan.
  • Difficulty Levels: The game has Normal, Easy, Hard, and Merg. The last one turns you into an One-Hit-Point Wonder.
  • Dramatic Irony: Since Clover went through the True Pacifist route, they have no idea what kind of person Flowey really is and is caught off-guard with how he's acting.
  • Even the Loving Hero Has Hated Ones:
    • Clover really hates Mettaton, especially after seeing how he turned Hotland into an Egopolis. Should you wish, you can go ahead and tear down one of Mettaton's posters (the one before the opera and tile maze) at Clover's request, with Clover and Chara both ecstatic if you do, though Clover will get over it if you leave it be and come back later.

      Chara: DOWN WITH THE POSTER!!!
      Clover: DOWN WITH THE POSTER!!!

    • When Clover asks Frisk what their wish is in Waterfall, Frisk replies "a Jerry pinata".
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: The 2.0 version delivers a few.
    • When solving the piano puzzle in Waterfall, the melody will end with a faint sound of a maraca. Then when you enter the room, it's pitch black and Clover wishes you good luck. It's El Bailador!
    • Unlike base Undertale, if you lie on the empty bed in the True Lab, nothing will happen. Then you go pick the yellow key under the bed sheets... And Kanako shows up as a new fightable Amalgamate.
  • Flat "What":
    • What Chara's reaction to Clover's weapon of choice boils down to.

      "Is."
      "Is that a gun."

    • And again when Clover complains there's no gunpowder in Asgore's fridge.

      Chara: ...what?

  • The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You: The finale of the Genocide run is Clover deleting your save files as retribution. When you re-open the game, unlike typical Undertale which recalls the name you picked and other such details, you have to input everything from the beginning. And Clover spends subsequent runs watching you from reflections.
  • Funny Background Event: In the fight against Papyrus, you can see the Annoying Dog stealing the bones littering the background through increasingly convoluted methods.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration:
    • Played with. In regular Undertale, the stats revealed by a CHECK do not actually match the stats actually applying in battle. This mode shows the gameplay stats. However, given how Undertale establishes that magic is based on intent, an interpretation is that the Undertale CHECK stats are the real ones and the gameplay is the result of each monster's mood.
    • The running feature is turned off during the Undyne encounters. When Clover complains about it in her boss fight, Frisk more or less replies they're walking instead of running to troll her.
  • Hello, [Insert Name Here]: Just like in Undertale, you can name the first Fallen Human at the start of the game, but this time the game has even more reactions to your pick. Unlike base Undertale, the save files are named "Frisk" instead of the name you pick.
    • There are several names from Yellow that prompt unique lines. You can't pick most of them.

      Chujin: This is Chujin. No.

    • The game reacts if you type the name of a popular Undertale YouTuber. For example, typing Shayy forces you into the Sans fight right away, with a mixed opening pattern. If you get through the first attack, Sans says he was testing if the user is an impostor or not.
  • I Choose to Stay: In the True Pacifist ending, after being brought back to life, Clover chooses to stay with Flowey to keep an eye on him.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Just like base Undertale and the Final Boss on the True Pacifist route, you need to reach out to the main six characters as Lost Souls and bring them back to their senses. Uniquely for this mod, Clover also appears amongst the Lost Souls needing to be freed.
  • Idle Animation: Stay idle long enough, and Frisk will sit down. The ghosts also become increasingly solid the longer you stand still.
  • Innocently Insensitive: In the Wishing Room, Clover exclaims how beautiful it is. Chara tells them it's the wishes of monsters trapped beneath a fake sky, which is actually very sad. Clover meekly tries to defend themselves by saying they just thought it's pretty.
  • Insult of Endearment: Clover and Flowey fire several at each other at the True Pacifist ending.
  • Interface Screw: The text when checking the vending machine in Steamworks is half hidden by two pillars up front.

"Something about this place makes it hard to hear your own thoughts."

    • This error is fixed in the 2.0 version, which is lampshaded.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: Chara and Frisk are hit with this hard at the end of a Genocide run. Right before killing Flowey, Clover saves him and attacks Frisk, reducing their HP by half and letting the flower escape. Clover then delivers a "The Reason You Suck" Speech, reminds Frisk and Chara they warned them they won't forgive them, and then kills Frisk and deletes their SAVE file. It's possible to attack Clover after they deliver their "The Reason You Suck" Speech and proceed with the Genocide ending as normal, but you'll only get away with it once; attempting a second Genocide run will have Clover dodge the attack, mocking Frisk for thinking they'd fall for it twice before gunning them down. It's impossible to get the base Undertale Genocide ending after this.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Clover does this a lot.
    • They points out how weird it is that nobody ever asks for Frisk's name.
    • In the battles with Undyne, they comment on how Frisk doesn't run in them.
  • Mirror Monster: The reflections on the water puddles in Waterfall don't reflect what they're supposed to.
    • On a Pacifist or Neutral playthrough, Frisk's reflection is Chara while Monster Kid's is Asriel.
    • On a Genocide playthrough, Frisk's reflection is still Chara, but with their blacked-out eyes from the ending.
    • In a post-genocide playthrough, Monster Kid's reflection is him, but Frisk's reflection is Clover glaring daggers at them.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Right before fighting Toriel, Clover suggests staying with her. This references how according to Flowey, in their first several runs, they decided to stay with Toriel in the Ruins. That said, Clover doesn't recall those timelines, and since their ending is the True Pacifist, they don't recall this reveal either.
    • Clover often comments how certain areas of the Underground feel familiar even though they've never been there. This is in reference to the several hundred failed runs Flowey mentions in Yellow's neutral ending.
    • When Frisk checks the broken vending machine at Steamworks, they get a feeling it'd be very rude.
  • New Technology Is Evil: The second Frisk receives a notification from Alphys' social media, Clover says the Mail Whale was right about phones.
  • One-Hit-Point Wonder: The "Merg" difficulty mode reduces your HP to one.
  • Only Sane Man: Should you backtrack to the start of the Ruins before departing, Chara considers themselves this in the midst of Frisk and Clover's antics.
  • Rainbow Speak: Parodied. When Sans gives his "blue stop signs" speech, in the second half the text changes colour with each word, and for each time you talk to him he uses different colour combinations for "blue stop sign".
  • Recursive Fanfiction: This mod stars Clover from Undertale Yellow, and many, many references to that game.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Chara is the Blue oni, being formal, cold and cynical. Clover is the Red oni, being an optimist with a southern accent and a tendency to get heated.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: In the Genocide run, Clover stops Frisk from killing Flowey, letting the flower make his escape. However, this can be rendered All for Nothing if Clover gets killed, leading to Chara erasing the world anyway.
  • Ship Tease: Throughout a Pacifist run, there are some pretty clear indicators that Clover has a crush on Chara:
    • TALKing after the fight with the Royal Guards (which ends in the two realizing their feelings for each other and getting ice cream) has this exchange:

Clover: ...Totally unrelated, but do you like ice cream, Chara?

      Chara: Who doesn't?

      Clover: True! Very true...

    • TALKing after the Alphys date has Chara muse how weird it was for it to be in the Garbage Dump:

Chara: Who even thinks of having a date in this place??

Clover: Where would- I mean if you were on a- ...Where do people usually go on dates?

Chara: I don't know, a restaurant or something? Just anywhere but here.

      (Frisk TALKs again)

Clover: ...Frisk? Why are you looking at me like that? ...What do you mean Undertale Red & Yellow - TV Tropes (7)"I know what you are"???

      • This potentially recontextualizes the two sharing a table together during Frisk's dinner with Sans, as well as them refusing to tell Frisk what they were talking about during it afterwards.
    • After entering New Hope, TALKing the first time ends in Chara baffled over Clover ending their dramatic speech to Frisk with "...Or something.":

      (Frisk TALKs again)

Clover: Dang, I ruined it! I was trying to talk more like you. Your speeches are great!

      Chara: ...

      Clover: yoursmileisalsogreat. ANYWAYS!

      (Frisk TALKs again)

      Chara: ...What.

  • Terse Talker: Chara and Frisk are increasingly stingy with their words during a Genocide playthrough. Towards the end, item descriptions are barely three words at best.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Clover delivers several in the Genocide run before stopping engaging with the others entirely. They come back with another scathing one at the ending before killing Frisk.
  • Unexpected Gameplay Change: This is what the secret encounter with El Bailador can best be summed up as, being a three-phase rhythm duel in the vein of games like Friday Night Funkin' rather than a standard battle.
  • Video Game Cruelty Potential: After acquiring the items that belonged to Clover ("Cowboy Hat" and "Wild Revolver") and Chara ("Heart Locket" and "Worn Dagger"), it's still possible to throw them away. Both will protest once for the weapons, and twice for the armor, neither wanting you to get rid of the latter due to their importance to the two ghosts. Proceed anyway, and while Clover passive-aggressively calls you out on ditching the hat, Chara seems heartbroken (complete with Eyes Framed In Shadow on their overworld sprite), as the locket was the only memory they had left of who Flowey once was. This can be done even if you're set on a True Pacifist run.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Clover gives you one as soon as you trigger the Genocide run, saying that while killing in self-defense in justifiable, there's no justification for senseless slaughter.
    • Clover is quick to see a Double Standard should you spare Monster Kid, yet go on to kill Undyne anyway, and is quick to call you out for it.
  • You Remind Me of X: Clover says Papyrus "reminds him of someone", with that someone heavily implied to be Martlet. They think they'd get along well.
