Critics Consensus

The Crazies isn't top-shelf Romero, but its blend of genre thrills and social subtext should still be enough to satisfy discerning horror fans.

The Crazies | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Tasha Robinson Polygon Romero does build some intense tension around the scenario, and the questions of who's going to survive it, and whether they'll deserve to. Mar 30, 2021 Full Review The Crazies | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Jerry Renshaw Austin Chronicle The Crazies offers no hope, no comfort and sure as hell no happy ending. Sep 28, 2018 Full Review The Crazies | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Vincent Canby New York Times An inept science-fiction film from George A. Romero. May 9, 2005 Full Review The Crazies | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Robert Horton The Scarecrow The movie feels like picking up a newspaper from the early 70s and scanning the downbeat headlines. (Truffaut said that The Night of the Hunter was like “A horrifying news item retold by small children”; The Crazies is a newscast delivered by the insane.) Rated: 3.5/4 May 3, 2024 Full Review The Crazies | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Even if Romero steals from himself to come up with his plot and themes for The Crazies, the film deserves its place as a cult classic on a purely cinematic level. Rated: 3/4 Aug 22, 2023 Full Review The Crazies | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Matt Brunson Film Frenzy While far from Romero's best, The Crazies is in one way his most frightening film. Sams K Ahead of its time, after the pandemic this brings our attention to how sometimes governments shouldn't rule private citizens life. Great Romero. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/09/24 Full Review Craig B Okay... The Crazies was a classic back in its day, but now, sorry to say, it is a challenging watch. It has all the hallmarks of classic Romero, but it just has not aged well.I highly recommend the 2010 remake with Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell... a very fine remake, with the great man George A. Romero ensuring it is relatively faithful to the original, as an Executive Producer. Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/22/24 Full Review Alejandro E From the same mastermind behind Night of the Living Dead, the story leans more towards psychological horror. The scares are not recurring and it is dedicated to playing with the viewer's patience. It is not bad but it will be one of those that one hates to love or loves to hate. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/07/24 Full Review Jonathan O Spoiler there's no zombie but is really bloody and really disturbing scenes since Vietnam War and really great writing and directing by Romero and amazing cinematography it really felt a documentary. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/24/23 Full Review bill t It's a fairly interesting (and timely) idea, A virus attacks a small town, and it's up to the grovernment to stop it without clarifying what it really is, and the small bands of townspeioke fighting to escape the forced quarantine. It does get bogged down by the repeated displays of beauracratic incompetence. I mean, we saw it one scene, we get it, but it just continues on during the length of the film, and also I am guessing the budget was low.. It just feels low, minimal special effects for this type of movie sort of dulls out the movie. Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member The premise and acting was good. Im afraid I couldn't finish this movie so I didnt get the the actual effects or real plot. I know, I know I shouldn't review a movie that I didnt finish but it is a chore to get past even 30 minutes of this. The Audio Quality was awful and I mean REAL awful I could hardly hear what the characters were saying and they had this weird sound that made it hard for us to hear anyone. Not to mention there was ALOT of filler. Maybe if I somehow finished this movie without going deaf I would like it IDK. Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Read all reviews
