In New York City, an insolent pickpocket, Skip McCoy (Richard Widmark), inadvertently sets off a chain of events when he targets ex-prostitute Candy (Jean Peters) and steals her wallet. Unaware that she has been making deliveries of highly classified information to the communists, Candy, who has been trailed by FBI agents for months in hopes of nabbing the spy ringleader, is sent by her ex-boyfriend, Joey (Richard Kiley), to find Skip and retrieve the valuable microfilm he now holds.

“I’m so tired you’d be doing me a big favor if you’d blow my head off,” says aging informant and petty criminal Moe Williams portrayed by the inimitable Thelma Ritter during one of the most moving scenes in all of noir. (Her performance was nominated for an Academy Award). Moe is one of the many desperate characters plotting to survive another day in Samuel Fuller’s Pickup on South Street, which stars Richard Widmark as prolific pickpocket Skip McCoy who steals more than he bargained for from subway passenger Candy (Jean Peters). It seems Candy had been unknowingly transporting government secrets on microfilm for her ex-boyfriend Joey (Richard Kiley), who is actually a communist spy. Candy’s also been under surveillance by government agent Zara (Willis Bouchey) and his associates who hope she’ll lead them to the head of the spy ring. Soon, both the government agents and the foreign agents are hunting for McCoy, each tapping into Moe’s knowledge of the underground to learn his whereabouts (a waterfront shack), but McCoy’s denial of knowledge and involvement just leads to more intimidation. Fuller paces the action flawlessly and extracts maximum tension from all the intrigue, beginning with the brilliantly shot opening subway sequence, while leaving space for pathos, primarily in the friendship between McCoy and Moe, who dreams of saving enough money so she can have a fancy funeral instead of being dumped in a Potter’s field (“I have to go on making a living so that I can die”)...

Skip McCoy (Widmark) is een kruimeldief die pakt wat hij pakken kan. Maar als hij de tas van Candy (Peters) steelt, beseft hij niet waaraan hij begint. Er zit namelijk een microfilm in, en binnen de kortste keren heeft hij verschillende spionage- organisaties en de politie achter zich aan. Superieure film noir met een droom van een cast. Fuller observeert het geweld ijskoud, hij heeft met niemand medelijden en probeert ook niemand sympathiek te maken. Een haarscherpe analyse van de fysieke en psychische zwakheden van een zakkenroller. Ritter kreeg een Oscarnominatie voor haar rol als straatventster die vooral gespecialiseerd is in de verkoop van inlichtingen. Fuller schreef het originele scenario, al wordt het verhaal op de titelrol toegeschreven aan Dwight Taylor. In 1953 op het Festival van Venetië bekroond met de Bronzen Leeuw. One afternoon, FBI agents Zara and Enyart are following an attractive woman named Candy as she takes the subway in New York City. Unknown to Candy, her wallet is stolen by a "cannon," a pickpocket who targets women, and when she realizes that her wallet is gone, she calls her former boyfriend, Joey. With Enyart following her, she returns to Joey's apartment, where Joey upbraids her for losing the microfilm that she was supposed to deliver to a mysterious higher-up in Joey's organization.
